Veteran Johnson Leads Legends, Earns Player Of The Week

Lloyd Johnson and the Schenectady Legends are back in the IBA. After a runner-up finish in the 2012 Spring season the team (then known as the Albany Legends) went on hiatus. A two-game showcase in the 2014 IBA Spring season was a huge success and team president Steve Miller brought the team back full-time this fall.

In the season opener Schenectady traveled to Binghamton to face the debuting Pioneers. The veteran-filled roster proved to be too much as the Legends cruised to a 148-85 victory. Seven players scored in double figures with Johnson leading the Legends attack with 28 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals. For his efforts, Lloyd Johnson is the Week 8 IBA Player of the Week.

New Legends Head Coach Scott Knapp commented on the role of “Pooh” Johnson saying, “in many ways, our team will only go as far as Lloyd “Pooh” Johnson takes us. He is our floor general and a captain who can make plays on both ends of the court. With the number of shooters we have, Pooh will be counted on to score as well as find his teammates.”

A “legend” of the Albany area basketball courts, Johnson graduated from Albany High School in 2003. His professional career has included every Legends game in franchise history and is the all-time leading scorer for the franchise. During the Legends first IBA season of 2012 Johnson scored a career-best 51 points, including eight three-pointers, in a 173-159 double-overtime victory over Lansing. That game is also the largest scoring game in IBA history.

After a brief collegiate career at Schenectady County Community College, Johnson has made other stops in his career, including the Hudson Valley Hype (EBA) and one season in Italy playing for U.S. Basket Lucera.

The 5’11” point guard also has an appearance on film, appearing in the 2012 documentary¬†Ballin’ At The Graveyard: Life and Pickup Basketball At One American Park. The film was released to DVD/online streaming on October 14, 2014. Watch the entire film here.

  1. Great page …being from Rotterdam in the late 1960’s ..I watched Dick Crossett play at Albany State SUNY ..I just wonder what he would have been like playing for the legends now…you missed something if you missed Crosett play! Osinski from Siena would have been something else also…great page hope at some time I get to watch the present team play.
